List Preview - Onorevoli

Onorevoli - Special Edition
Retired? Not if I can help it!

Today's list preview is something special. I've come up with a couple of list designs for Brian's Space Marine army, the Onorevoli. Now, they're a special army because they're a custom marine chapter and they're played in a fluffy manner. And I've made up not one, but two lists this time! :D

You may be wondering why I'm designing lists for someone else's fluff based army that has been retired. For me, it's a question of duty. Brian's primary opponent is his friend's Iron Warriors army and as an Imperial Fist player, I gotta help him crush them!

In order that the list ideas I'm presenting make any sense, I feel it necessary to present some tenants of the army's design based around their background. So, here are a few of the main points to his army.
  • The Onorevoli are obsessively dedicated with the destruction of the Iron Warriors. They have even absorbed elements of the Iron Warriors color patterns.
  • They're on the verge of slipping to Chaos in the pursuit of their target.
  • The chapter is lead by Librarians (who are the ones that are slipping to Chaos)
  • Scouts are the main troop choice with Tacticals being rare. The chapter burns through marines quickly, and new recruits are fast tracked up the ranks to fill in the gaps.
If you'd like to pour through some of the background yourself, check out the links above. These are the points that I feel are the most important to stick to as far as a fluffy list design goes. The first list to look at is one that's meant to be exceedingly fast. It should sweep in and overwhelm with intense firepower. I really like it :)

1850 Pts - Codex: Space Marines Roster - Onorevoli Fast 1850
HQ: Space Marine Librarian in Terminator Armour
1 Space Marine Librarian in Terminator Armour, Storm Shield, Epistolary: Avenger, Null Zone
Troops: Scout Squad
4 Scout Squad, 2x Bolt Pistol & CCW, 2x Shotguns
      1 Sergeant, Combi-Meltagun, Power Fist

   1 Land Speeder Storm, Multi-melta
Heavy Support: Predator
1 Predator, Heavy Bolter (each side)
Heavy Support: Predator
1 Predator, Heavy Bolter (each side)

You can begin the game by dropping in with twenty Sternguard Veterans and being cooking powerful enemy units, or even drop a death star unit with Plasma. After that, you can finish up the job with Vengence Rounds. Meanwhile, the Scouts move up the field in their Land Speeder Storms to provide some support, and are in turn supported by the Predators and anti infantry fire from the Snipers (who can also hold rear objectives). The Tactical squad can drop in to provide support or to capture/contest an objective. Alternatively, they can also deploy with the rest of the army to provide some extra fire with the pod coming in empty later. It's a very fast list that I think has a lot of potential to dish out pain. I'm curious as to how well it could function. If one were so inclined, you could probably squeeze Pedro Kantor in rather than a Librarian (though that would counter fluff) to make the Sternguard Veterans a scoring, and thereby an even larger threat.

On to list number 2. If the first is a fast and hard hitting list, the second is a lumbering behemoth that slams into the enemy army like a freight train. Let's have a look.

1850 Pts - Codex: Space Marines Roster - Onorevoli Heavy 1850
HQ: Space Marine Librarian in Terminator Armour
1 Space Marine Librarian in Terminator Armour, Storm Shield, Epistolary: Gate of Infinity, Avenger
Troops: Scout Squad
9 Scout Squad, Heavy Bolter w/Hellfire Shells
      1 Sergeant, Combi-Meltagun, Power Fist
Troops: Scout Squad
9 Scout Squad, Heavy Bolter w/Hellfire Shells
      1 Sergeant, Combi-Meltagun, Power Fist
Fast Attack: Land Speeder Storm
   1 Land Speeder Storm, Multi-melta
Fast Attack: Land Speeder Storm
   1 Land Speeder Storm, Multi-melta
Troops: Scout Squad
4 Scout Squad, Camo Cloaks, Heavy Bolter w/Hellfire Shells
      1 Sergeant, Camo Cloak
Elite: Terminator Assault Squad
   7 Terminator Assault Squad, 3x Lightning Claws, 4x TH/SS
      1 Sergeant, TH/SS
1 Land Raider Crusader, Extra Armor, Multi-melta
Elite: Terminator Squad
9 Terminator Squad, Chain Fist x1, Cyclone Missile Launcher x2
      1 Sergeant

So, we have nearly 20 terminators in this list along with a Land Raider. Those are some very big, hard hitting units that aren't easily destroyed. The basic idea I have bouncing in my head is that the Assault Terminators move up the field in the Land Raider in order to beat the piss out of whoever gets in front of them. The normal Terminators walk up the field and fire off their Cyclone Missiles to break open light armor, or can be teleported around by the Librarian to wreak havoc. The Scouts take advantage of such large threats and use the distraction to move up the field and provide support. They can also be broken into combat squads to take advantage of the Land Speeder Storms for fast assistance where they're needed. The small Scout squad is there just to dig in and be a nuisance, as that's the Scouts' true purpose. :)

I feel that the ultimate strength that both lists have is their flexibility. Depending on mission type, deployment, and enemy types present, they can easily be shifted into alternate roles to accomplish their goals. What are your thoughts?

  1. The Onorevoli are dead. LONG LIVE THE ONOREVOLI!!!

Thank you for these tremendous ideas. I believe that you very well may have resuscitated these poor, old sods yet.

    Thank you. Thank you.
    Tremendous.

  2. I'd love to see a battle report the next time you dig them out. I wanna know how they fair with what you decide to incorporate into them. :) Take down those traitors!

  3. For the first list: I would suggest taking your five man scout squads and combining them to full ten man squads. This will take advatage of the new faq, and reduce the number of kill points, yet still be able to hold as many should you choose to combat squad. You'll lose out on the extra powerfist from one of your sergeants, but free up a few extra points later.

My big question for the first list is where does your HQ fit in? what role does he have, beside Brian made an amazing model for him?

For the second list: I like the ten man scout squads, I would suggest dropping two of the assault marines, hammer and claw each, add the Libby to the crusader crew though I would throw null zone on him, and I would drop the five man scout squad. You can still combat squad to take four obj's if necessary.

This would allow you to throw a chaplain in terminator armor in there. Now I know fluff-wise the chapter is led by Libby's who are slowly falling to chaos. If wanted I would suggest that somewhere one of the Libbys realized they were becoming unchecked and ordered a member of the Reclusium to join on missions with some of the more out of control leaders. I like the concept, plus it would really up your hitting power of your death star.

Anyway, sorry for such a long reply, but I really like your blog and have added it to my blogroll. Keep up the good work.

  4. I took the small Scout squads becasue I wanted the WS4 and BS4 on the Sergeants. Having that slightly higher chance to hit with the Combi-melta seemed worth the price, not to mention first turn assault with those power fists would be a huge boon to the squads in Drop Pods. I had figured the Librarian could ride down with one of the Sternguard squads to support them. Come to think of it, he should probably have Force Dome. Be good for protecting a unit that exposed. I gave him the Avenger because it was the power Brian always used with him. I had figured it went with his fluff and AP3 doesn't hurt when fighting traitor Marines, either.

As for the second list, I love your ideas. It's a great take on the list and what I've seen of the fluff for the army. :)

Don't worry about the long reply. I quite enjoyed it. Been trying really hard to get feedback on all of my list ideas, but so far it's been pretty quiet. I'll keep on at it and thanks for subscribing. :)

  5. Glad I can help, hope he gives it a try and maybe it will help him to throw down a good fight :)

  6. I sure hope so. Be nice to hear that they beat some face! :D Just hope he isn't fighting a list tailored against this post. :P

I had even pondered, for a few moments, adding in some Legion of the Damned. Thought it would be cool for the fluff, as a squad summoned by these near heretical Librians. Decided they're a little pointy to hinge a list on though. :)
