List Preview/Review

That's right. It's dual Land Raider time.

I have a local tournament coming up this weekend that a friend of mine insists I play in. Because I've not played a singles tournament before and because he is adamant about me trying, I caved and had him assist me in designing a more competitive list. Having, himself, seen much success in the last event by bringing a rock list, that's what we designed. A list with 2 Land Raiders in a game that's 1500 points. Hopefully they'll be a tough enough nut to crack that I can sneak some wins through. :)
The list is as follows.

1500 Pts - Tournament 1500 Experimental
Total Roster Cost: 1500
HQ: Space Marine Librarian in Terminator Armour
1 Space Marine Librarian in Terminator Armour, Storm Shield, Avenger, Null Zone
Elite: Terminator Assault Squad
   5 Terminator Assault Squad 3 TH/SS, 2 LC
      1 Sergeant TH/SS
      1 Land Raider Crusader, Multi-melta
Troops: Tactical Squad
   9 Tactical Squad, Flamer, Multi-melta
      1 Sergeant, Combi-Meltagun x1, Power Fist x1
      1 Razorback
Troops: Tactical Squad
9 Tactical Squad, Plasma gun, Missile Launcher
      1 Sergeant, Combi-Meltagun x1, Power Fist x1
      1 Razorback
Fast Attack: Attack Bike Squad
   1 Attack Bike Squad, Multi-melta x1
Fast Attack: Attack Bike Squad
   1 Attack Bike Squad, Multi-melta x1
Heavy Support: Land Raider Crusader
   1 Land Raider Crusader, Multi-melta

So, the logic here would be to have the tactical squad with the Flamer/MM inside one Land Raider, the Terminators & Librarian inside the other Land Raider, and combat squad the Plasma gun Tacticals and deploy/embark them in both Razorbacks. Combined with the MM Attack Bikes, this leaves me with a very mobile and hard hitting force that can move up the field and be hard to take down.

I do understand that Razorback Spam would probably be more effective, but as the tournament is WYSIWYG, that's out of the question for at least another month. Then I'll be able to afford the proper bits to upgrade them to Las/Plas and really cause some trouble. I did a small amount of testing today against some Grey Hunter/Long Fang spam with decent success, but it did lose to a Logan-wing list right after. Anyway, I had hoped that enough people would take a glance and maybe be willing to provide some feedback. :)

  1. I'm sure you've already thought about all this already though, but if you haven't here's my two cents.

Clever use of Bikes as mobile AT units. I would make sure your bikes have proper cover behind your vehicles as you move forward and remember to only spring out when you're within 12" and hopefully where another squad is in position to Nom anything that pops out. I'd also suggest keeping your Bikes together so that if one misses (or fails to expodenate [that's a technical term]) the vehicle you've another one to back it up. Everything will be moving at best 12" per turn with both landraiders shooting anything that's close. When you're army can slow down to 6" or less you'll be at the perfect killing speed.

Since your razorbacks are full of Tac Marines decked out for close/mid range shooting it'll be a good idea to drive them close.

The thing I don't like about tournaments is that fun is secondary to victory. Which means that people are bringing in the bullshit units Manticores, Doom of Malantai, etc... Get a judge of your opponent if they aren't stuck on winning then have fun. If they're a douche, be a douche back. You're only hurting yourself if you aren't. Spread your wounds, count those inches, make sure they run in the shooting phase. Especially that last one, it can make or break a mission. When deploying this is doubly important (Dawn of War walking on). Have your FAQ on hand and be ready to not only defend your rules the rules at large. People will try and take advantage of loop holes and gray spots all the time.

Now that I've scared you just remember technically your there to have fun and enjoy playing against people you don't normally play against (usually). You'll learn new tactics and things about your army and other armies you've never thought of. If you've got someone awesome on the other side then great, think of it like Sunday Warhammer and have a good time. Most 40k players aren't rule twisting dick holes whose only reason for being there is to win.

...sorry lots of shitty tournament players in my gaming history.

  2. One more thing I want to add, if something sounds overpowered it probably isn't in their codex. Have them show it to you. Tom learned that from the S9 AP2 Particle Whip. Those guys should have their asses kicked.

  3. Went and didn't do too great. Had a couple great games and one where my opponent was skipping rolls. Kind of ignored it because I'd already killed myself on saves, but he wound up tabling me in the long run.

  4. Those are some killer looking Land Raiders!

I think your list will be fine, so long as you play smart. It warms my heart to see people trying different lists, too. Not everyone has to have a "net" list.

Good luck at the event, let us know how it goes!

  5. Sadly, those aren't my Land Raiders :( But I will have a Battle Report up today for the tournament. Had a blast playing and snapped a couple pictures. You'll get to see my Land Raiders in those in all of their glory (or lack thereof) :)
