List Preview - Team Doubles

Time to team up!

Coming up in just one week is a team tournament at a not quite local game store. It's a Team Shenanigans tournament based on breaking lists. Being a team tournament, my interest was immediately piqued. So, Tom and I began, straight away, to look at what sort of broken shenanigans we were able to muster. With 1 HQ and 2 troops as well as only a thousand points per player, nothing we could come up with had the staying power to be promising. So, rather than trying to game the system, we decided this would be a wonderful test for our refined balanced team lists in preparation for next months events. What I'm asking of here is for any extra advice we can gain towards our lists. If there's any way to get a better edge that we've missed, then I want to know about it. Well, here they are.

First up, the Space Wolves list.

1000 Pts - Space Wolves Roster - Team Tourney List SW 1000pts
HQ: Rune Priest in Power Armour
1 Rune Priest in Power Armour, Chooser of the Slain

8 Grey Hunters Pack, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Meltagun
1 Grey Hunter w/ Mark of the Wulfen
      1 Rhino, Dozer Blade
Troops: Grey Hunters Pack

1 Grey Hunter w/ Mark of the Wulfen

1 Wolf Guard in Power Armour, Combi-Meltagun, Thunder Hammer
1 Wolf Guard in Power Armour

   1 Dreadnought, 2x Twin-Linked Autocannon
Elite: Lone Wolf in Terminator Armour
1 Lone Wolf in Terminator Armour, Chain Fist, Storm Shield
      2 Fenrisian Wolf
Heavy Support: Long Fangs Pack
5 Long Fangs Pack, Missile Launcher x4, Plasma Cannon

Followed by the Space Marine list.

1000 Pts - Codex: Space Marines Roster - Team Tourney List 1000pts
HQ: Chaplain Cassius
   1 Chaplain Cassius
Troops: Tactical Squad
9 Tactical Squad, Plasma gun, Lascannon
      1 Sergeant, Combi-Meltagun, Power Fist
      1 Razorback, Dozer Blade
Troops: Tactical Squad
   9 Tactical Squad, Meltagun, Lascannon
      1 Sergeant, Power Fist
      1 Razorback, Dozer Blade
Elite: Dreadnought
   1 Dreadnought, 2x Twin-Linked Autocannon
Elite: Dreadnought
   1 Dreadnought, 2x Twin-Linked Autocannon
Heavy Support: Thunderfire Cannon
   1 Thunderfire Cannon
      1 Techmarine Gunner

So, the wolves hop into their Rhinos and the marines combat squad into the Razorbacks while Lascannon squads hunker down in the back with the Thunderfire cannon and the Long Fangs. The three dreadnoughts are able to move around and provide anti-light armor fire and the Lone Wolf is our wild card. What do you think?

  1. Maybe something CQC so that you can put a buffer to protect against a fast moving assault unit, especially if it's going to be trying to play as broken as possible. I can see something getting inside of those missiles and ruining the Long Fangs and Thunderfire's day.

  2. I have to agree about seeming to miss a close combat punch. Between the two of you, you have 3x twin-auto dreds, long fangs, thunderfire cannon, combat squaded tacs, etc.... A strong shooty backfield, but you have little forward punch. While most things coming across the table are going to get blasted you have limited ability to exert dominance (physical presence) in your opponents sector.

I'm not sure what the meta is in your enviroment but beside the handfull of melta what is your plan for landraiders, or fast moving wytches showing up in your backfield? or snigrot and commandos/warboss showing up? If someone gets through your wall of lead you might be in trouble.

The lone wolf seems like an extra point throw in. I would suggest that you have plenty of distance shooting, and that one of you should throw in a dedicated combat unit

You could change the grey hunters to five man w/melta and a razorback ded transport, drop the lone wolf and dred and you will have enough points for four thunderwolf cav with storm shields, one with hammer, one mark of wulfen and one with melta bombs.

Something along these lines will give you a unit that can exert influence on the opponent as well as having a distracting mobile killing unit.

Anyway, the most important thing about list building is that you are comfortable with it and it works for your play style. Whatever you choose I hope you guys do well.

I wrote some tips on http://littlesilverguuys.blogspot.com/ on my take on pre and during mission analysis that might help.

Good luck and take pics :)

  3. I thank you both for your imput :) Glad to get some fresh ideas. With 1 HQ and 2 Troops being required for each player, we're a little pigeon-holed into what we're taking. We had a list designed before that had more punch, but we were always outshot. In a test this weekend, we had some issues against an assault oriented BT list.

Got some things to think on now. As far as AV 14 is concerned, we had hoped to counter primarily with melta and the Lone Wolf's chain fist. My side is packing Lascannons in combat squads, but in our recent test, they don't do enough to AV 14 to make a difference. Hard to bring the pain at this point value without being in a bad postion for objective capture.

With the event structured around shenanigans, we had considered throwing the Rune Priest in with my support units and Cassius in with the Grey Hunters to give them some more punch.

We have seen some pleasing results with the Dakka Dreads that leave me wanting to hang onto them. We've had a difficult time with enemy heavy units and light transports in the past and they seem to bring them down with reliabilty.

We're also hoping that with 4 Rhinos/Razorbacks, and the 3 Dakka Dreads, we'll have enough target saturation to keep mobile. :)
